Basics of Green Beauty – Tip Four Say no to Petrochemicals

March 26, 2014

petrochemicals

Petrochemicals, sounds a little like petrol, sounds a little suspicious don’t you think?

That’s why we’re here to tell you a little more about:

1. what this term actually means in relation to your beauty products and

2. why it might be a good idea to give it the old ‘one two’ (flick!)

Nasty? why you say?

One particular form of Petrochemicals you may be familiar with in cosmetics is mineral oils. Mineral oil is a by-product of petroleum distillation, and during the process a whole host of other solvents and acids are used.

Similar to our little friend the Parabens, the issue with mineral oils like petroleum jelly (also known as a Petrolatum) is that it can be contaminated with cancer-causing polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Because it is often tricky to distinguish whether the chemical is being used in its pure form, is another reason to be suspicious.

Unlocking the basics of green beauty

basics of green beauty

One part of the journey to becoming A Conscious Beauty, is making conscious choices every day about what we put on our skin, hair and nails.

We love bringing you beautiful products and spectacular ingredients, but we also recognise that some of you might be just starting out on A Conscious Beauty journey. Overwhelming yes, we know that feeling all too well, so we want to make it easy for you.

My personal journey has been over 15 years of discovery, from a pimply faced teenager to a young woman, I am still learning the good from the bad. As our world becomes filled with more and more (often hidden) toxic nasties, it is important that you have a basic understanding of what is in your beauty products.

Favourite Finds – Jacqueline Evans Jojoba & Camellia Balancing Cream

February 17, 2014

The Jacqueline Evans skincare range first caught my attention in an unusual way when she was featured on one of my favourite design blogs – The Design Files. It was her ‘Tasty Tuesday’ fare and attention to the Hippocrates concept of ‘food is medicine’ that made me think this Melbourne Naturopath is really on to something.

Of course, it was fitting that a Naturopath whose goal is to nourish the skin from the inside out, would also create one of the most beautiful Organic Skincare ranges on the market. And did I say the packaging is bold yet elegant? Music to my ears!

The Jacqueline Evans range definitely ticks all the boxes on A Conscious Beauty’s checklist – and some. Her products are 100% Australian owned and made, use the highest quality botanicals, cold pressed oils and are enriched with vitamins and herbals.

Why you should go organic at that time of the month

Being A Conscious Beauty is about living a life that follows a holistic approach to beauty, both inside and out. For us, this means making conscious choices every day about the products that touch our skin. It is being confident that what you put on your skin, is as clean and natural as that green smoothie you devoured this morning.

One product often hidden from view (but plays a pivotal role every month for a large part of a women’s life) are personal hygiene products. Yes we are talking about tampons and pads. Yes Tampons and pads ladies!

One of my little secrets is that I have a number of girl crushes on female entrepreneurs (sprung!). One woman who recently stood out to me, is Aimee Marks and her Australian born and bred company – TOM Organic. She is all things tampons and pads, and her mission that started as a teenager has become an amazing organic product with a huge vision. While I could chat all day about her entrepreneurial skills, we should probably get down to the nitty-gritty of WHY organic tampons?
