Colourful beauty food plate by Primal Junction

April 29, 2014

colourful plate

This salad is a fast and easy way to sneak a rainbow of colours onto your plate. You may recall this was the focus of my recent post which showed you the vitamins and minerals obtained from different coloured vegetables. It looks beautiful and is a great lunch or afternoon tea option.

Adapt the rainbow plate depending on what you have available in your fridge or garden at home! I made this with a large can of tuna (go for a sustainable brand), but it’s also delicious with sliced free-range chicken breast, grass-fed steak strips or as a vegetarian salad bowl.

What colour is your plate?

April 8, 2014

Kale_red_text

Have you ever wondered why fruits and vegetables represent all the colours of the rainbow?

“Red and yellow and pink and green, purple and orange and blue…….”

The different colours on our plate represent a vast array of nutrients that correspond with  physiological processes ranging from seeing in the dark to fighting off the common cold. When Primal Junction works with individuals or athletes who have cleaned up their diet and removed a lot of the filler foods like breads, grains and cereals, they often tell us that they find it difficult to fill their plate. In addition, when clients switch to a higher protein diet, they substitute refined carbohydrates for acid-forming foods such as sugars and poor dairy, which contribute to inflammation rather than reduce it.

Autumn anti-inflammatory ginger tonic

March 25, 2014

As the seasons begin to change, you may notice a few more sniffles in the office or maybe you are a little bit more achy than usual, if so, Lizzy of Primal Junction has the perfect tonic for all our beauties.

Start your day with a dose of this refreshing tonic full of anti-inflammatory gingerols and alkalizing fresh lemon. If you’re used to waking up and having coffee on an empty stomach, try some ginger tonic first to reduce acidity and kick-start digestion.

You may recall Lizzy wrote in depth about inflammation and how anti-inflammatory foods can play a vital role in our recovery and overall vitality. If you missed her post, you may want to check it out here.

The ins and outs of inflammation

March 11, 2014

Inflammation is a natural response by the body as a way to protect itself from infection, injuries and intruders. Inflammation is natural, healthy and important for survival. For example, acute inflammation is the redness, swelling and heat that occurs when you cut your finger and is a critical stage in the repair process.

However, inflammation does become an issue when things go wrong and the body starts to illicit an immune response much more often than it needs to (or chronically). The result is  issues such as acne, fatigue, allergies, poor gut health, ulcers, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and more.
