How the birth of her second child, sparked her most innovative business yet with Rosie Drumbell

February 15, 2019

Meet the stunning Rosie Drumbell, founder of Lenny Rose Active.

Rosie and I first connected when I was working with lululemon and she owned her previous business Rise Yoga.

Now a busy mother of two young boys, Rosie has set her sites on carving out her niche in the activewear world.

With a background as both a yoga teacher and physiotherapist, Rosie sees this new venture as so much more than the clothing. Her desire is to use the brand as a way of educating women around movement pre and post pregnancy, as well as support women’s changing bodies.

She’s bold and brave and today I wanted to share her story, as it reveals that in any phase of life – anything is possible and you might just get your best idea yet!

Can you define the moment your heart decided it was time for a career change?

About half way through my pregnancy with my second son Raffie, I had the realisation that continuing to run a bricks and mortar business with 15+ contract staff was more than I wanted to be doing whilst bringing up my young family.

I wanted to make sure that he knew there was space in our lives for him before we arrived. I sort of fell into Lenny Rose, via a connection of my husbands and a conversation they had about my frustrations with the lack of quality, functional and attractive gear to wear whilst pregnant.

In practical terms, what first steps did you take towards designing a new career?

As mentioned, I was lucky to have a contact in the apparel industry, and so although I was a complete rookie, I had some guidance with where and how to start, and it just got rolling from there.

Although I’ve run my own businesses before, I have a strange sense of self belief in this project, in a way I haven’t had before. It feels very on purpose, and like a great way to create a platform to educate and inspire women in the childbearing years of their lives.

What was the best investment you made in yourself last year?

A stylist! I had an appointment with her to consult with me on my wardrobe and then we went shopping, after 2 babies in 2 years my wardrobe was atrocious! I am not really a “things” person, but I 100 percent believe that when we put effort into ourselves, we are showing ourselves love, care and enabling other women to do the same.

What was the biggest inner battle you had to overcome in putting your work out into the world?

We all have moments of self doubt, but they have been less along this journey than in the past – I have always been very self critical, to a fault, but I made the decision to believe in myself and trust that this is the right path, and the moments of self doubt are  now fewer and far between.

I definitely use breathing and meditation as a way to bring me back into my body and out of my head, which helps with grounding any negative self talk. I also just try to be present with my kids as much as I’m with them, and see the natural buoyancy and confidence that we have as kids- something to cherish and hold onto as we grow up and move through life.

Define the purpose of the work you do now? Has it evolved over time or did you always know who you wanted to work with?

I have done a lot of work with a business coach on my personal and business purpose over the last 2 years, and have clearly defined that my purpose is “to help bring women into wellbeing”.

I have always had the general purpose to help others, but working on and defining my strengths, talents and passions with my coach really helped me to narrow in on what I feel called to do through my personal and business purposes.

What daily practices allow you to bring creativity into your work and life?

I make time for myself every day- usually this means getting up when the house is quiet (and its dark outside!) to enjoy a peaceful tea or coffee, before going for a run, gym session or some yoga + meditation.

It is crucial to look after your own health and wellbeing as a mum, as a business owner, as someone who wants to give back – as you cant pour from an empty cup! I have also started listening to podcasts most days, as well as constantly enrolling in courses to up skill my knowledge in the areas that I am passionate about – pregnancy and post partum health and wellness, business, and self development.

What’s on you’re stop doing/start doing list right now?

Trying to stop drinking coffee. I know it doesn’t agree with me, but it just smells and tastes so damn good!! Haha!

Im working on parenting in a gentle way- which means to stop raising my voice at my toddler when he’s doing crazy things!

Finally, if you could give one piece of advice to your 18-year-old self upon finishing school, what would it be? (especially when it comes to career choices!)

That you don’t have to know it all now – life will change, pivot, as will you – and that’s completely OK. Travel, be wild and experience life to the fullest every day!
