Favourite Finds – Rasasara Herbal Face Cleansing Bar

January 28, 2015

Rasasara is a boutique Ayurvedic Organic ‘skinfood’ line that is carefully formulated in Melbourne, Victoria by the passionate Sonia Llyod. I was first introduced to the world of Ayurvedic skincare a couple of years ago when the lovely Lizzy of Primal Junction fame, kindly gifted me with an eye gel for Christmas. It wasn’t until moving to Melbourne that I stumbled upon the full line at my favourite Organic grocer, and of course you know with me – the rest is history!

If you are a fan of A Conscious Beauty, you will recall I first introduced you to Ayurvedic medicine when I let you in on a couple of my favourite morning rituals dry brushing and oil pulling. But before we get into the review, now would be a good time to let you in on the secret behind Ayurvedic skin care.

Ayurvedic skin care is carefully formulated based upon your bodies natural constitution. Depending on a variety of factors, a person will be typically dominant in at least one or two of the elements Water, Fire, Air, Space, and Earth. These elements relate to a specific skin type or dosha – Pitta, Kapha and Vata. After taking the short test on the Rasasara website, I discovered my leading skin type is Pitta, however, from time to time my skin might become more dominant in another depending on season or state of the body.

The facts: Let us start with why Rasasara fits our criteria?

  • It is Australian Made and Owned
  • It is edible – bonus points for that one!
  • All products are cruelty, paraben and sulphate free
  • Certified Organic Oils used in each product
  • All packaging is recycled and printed using vegetable inks

So what is my personal verdict? (the juicy bit)

This subtle cleansing bar is not just any old ‘soap’, although it may initially appear that way. To know that something has been lovingly formulated from thousands of years of Eastern medicine and handcrafted with your body type in mind adds deeper meaning. Clearly not your average soap!

With a little moisture on your hands, and after rolling it around in your palms a couple of times, the light foaming cleanser glides on easily. The most surprising feature of this handcrafted organically shaped, palm-sized bar is its longevity. I have been using it for almost a month now and will likely get at least one or two more months out of it.

The scent is very mild, it removes a light layer of make-up but with a heavier sunscreen on my skin I did need to cleanse twice. Once dry, my skin does feel incredibly smooth, as if it has had a light exfoliation. The one downside, was that my skin felt pretty dry in the first week of use day and night. I soon discovered that this is a result of your skin’s PH naturally balancing. This has now eased but my skin does require a light moisturise after. Even a spritz of the of the Aromatic Hydrating Mist from the Pitta range satisfies this.

Would I indulge again?

The cleansing bar is priced in the lower to mid range bracket and for that reason, it does make it an affordable option for a cleanser. For a mild, every day application the bar is perfect and it’s ease of use is appealing. However, I still find that my skin feels a little too dry after use. With this in mind and a little more research under my belt, it may be that I also tend towards a Vata skin type and would look to try this cleansing bar next time for comparison.

My favourite thing about the Rasasara brand is is that it is not your typical Clinique 3 step system. You won’t be seen cleansing, toning and moisturising in the Western way, rather cleansing bars, oils and mists make up your daily routine. The ingredient combinations draw from herbs, oils and minerals which take you on a unique journey to the East every time.

Although, I didn’t achieve 100% success with this particular product, I am certainly intrigued to try more of the Rasasara range – Ayurvedic skin care is next level of skin care wisdom as far as I am concerned.

Rasasara skin care is available for purchase on their website.
