Beauty Foods For Good Gut Health

As you may recall we blogged a while back about how good gut health = beautiful skin? Well, today we have another treat for all our beautiful readers – our newest contributor Lizzy Marsh is going to chat to us a bit more about easy ways to add probiotics to your diet.

You may have heard more and more lately about the importance of gut health. In fact, many believe that our health stems from the gut and the intricate balance between our gut flora, our intestinal lining and the foods we eat. Without a properly functioning gut, it becomes impossible to absorb the nutrients within our food and achieve optimal health. The human gut is home to approximately 100 trillion microorganisms and these help us with things like digestion, protection from infection, metabolism and immunity.

Today we have a wonderful guest post given to us by a close friend, Jonathan.

In this post he shares with us his experience of giving up alcohol for the month of January.

As a bloke, I’m not sure I qualify as a ‘Beauty’. I’ll gratefully accept classification as a ‘Beau’, if anyone is kind enough (and blind enough) to bestow it on me.

This January, I gave up alcohol for the month. I toasted in the new year with Champagne and friends, and then embarked on ‘Janudry’. Which is now drawing to a close…

So, why would anyone voluntarily give up alcohol for a whole month? Well there’s one really important and obvious reason. If you quietly count the number of times and places at which alcohol touches your life during a normal week, you’ll realise how saturated our modern culture is with the stuff. There’s the after-work drinks, that billboard ad on the way to work, the drunk guy in the street on the way home, Dexter slurping thirstily at a bottle of beer with his steak, Friday night work parties, Saturday evenings at home with mates, quiet Sunday afternoon beers, that bottle in the fridge… As a white, western, thirty-something it’s hard to avoid it. Which is precisely why I’m now trying to.

In the quest for glowing skin, I can’t help but notice all this talk about the correlation between gut health and the quality of your skin. It seems that the terms probiotic, prebiotic, gut-friendly and fermented are popping up all over the place – but what does this all mean for our skin?

A couple of recent articles lead me to delve a little deeper into the subject – the first by local Sydney beauty and Naturopath Carla Oates aka The Beauty Chef and the second from Paleo expert Dr Chris Kresser, who has a significant interest in skin health. He puts it very simply – “if you want to heal your skin, you have to heal your gut”. Need you say more Chris!

Why we are nuts about coconut

What is coconut oil?

If any of you know me well, you will know that I am pretty obsessed with this humble oil. As I write this, I am super excited to be letting you in on a 5000 year old secret that in some cultures is known as ‘the tree of life’ or ‘the tree of a thousand uses’. In our household, this oil is easily the most diverse food we consume and apply to our skin on a daily basis. So much so, I have taken to keeping a jar of coconut oil in the bathroom as my go to moisturiser.

I discovered this little gem of a food about 4 years ago, with the help of a Naturopath and close friends Chris and Nicky Jones of Primal Movement. At the time, I made a choice to seriously clean up my diet in an effort to overcome serious allergies. I drew from the principles behind paleo and primal living, which quickly led me to coconut oil.
