Empowerment and words – choose them wisely!

February 13, 2014
Why “I Don’t” Works Better Than “I Can’t”

Last month I wrote about the power of language and how to say no. This post builds on how your words can help to both empower you and frame your control.

The reason behind this empowering is that the words you choose to use help create a feedback loop in your brain, which can and will impact your future behaviours.

Picture this; every time you tell yourself “I can’t”, this creates a feedback loop in your mind that is a reminder of your limitations. Also, using this terminology indicates that you are forcing yourself to do something you actually do not want to do.

Spirited, The Desire Map & other inner beauty tools for 2014

February 12, 2014

I love this time of year, anticipation of what’s to come for the year ahead, a sense of renewal, shedding of old ideas and opening the way for new possibilities.

There are always goals on the board throughout the year and I for one, have a tendency to race ahead at full speed in order to achieve them, going from one to the other without many breaths in between. So when the new year rolls around, I make a point of taking the time to sit down, to pause, to just be.  Seeing what ‘comes up’ for me but with a focus on those soul-deep ‘core desired feelings’ that Ms Danielle LaPorte has me hooked on.

In the coming weeks, I will be revisiting my vision and goals so in order to help me along with the process I thought it might be fun to look at some of the inspiration tools floating around at A Conscious Beauty:

Letter to our future selves

February 6, 2014

The other week we looked back to the past and wrote letters to our 16 year-old selves – you can read them or re-read them if you want here. This week we took time out to look forward and wrote letters to the future us. These letters will have their big reveal next year in January.

It was certainly an interesting exercise. Below we each share with you our thoughts and feelings from going through this:

The path to success

January 22, 2014
Success means very different things to different people as it all depends on what lens you’re looking through and what you personally define as important. For some, success revolves around work – getting that promotion, receiving a sought after pay-rise or hitting all deadlines on a key project. For others, it revolves around sports and their hobbies – setting PBs, tackling a new course, scoring the match winning goal or their team taking out the league. Many others define success at a more personal level – achieving work-life balance, a harmonious & happy marriage, or studying and acing something new.

… And Breathe

December 19, 2013

Samoa Sunset Breathe

I wouldn’t consider myself a person that suffers from anxiety. However, this changes depending on the environment I sometimes find myself in. There are certain situations that do lead to me feeling worried, concerned, overwhelmed and dare I say it anxious.

The best trick I have learnt to help erode these feelings before they fully take hold, is to breathe when the feelings first arise. That’s right, simply to breathe. I take a couple of deep breaths, with or without my eyes being closed, and 9 times out of 10 the feelings have dissipated within a minute or so.
