Be willing to start over – my night with Danielle LaPorte

May 8, 2014

Wow, wow, wow with a healthy dose of Ohhh. Emm. Gee!!

I had the sublime pleasure of seeing this beauty in the flesh on Tuesday night at the Art Gallery of NSW. I also had the sublime pleasure of giving her a hug as well. Everyone else in the line up was thanking her for speaking and changing their lives etc. etc. and like the dork I am, I told her she smelt great – she thanked me and told me it was simply Rose water and Geranium. And, that was that, a very surreal moment for us both I think!

Let’s start at the beginning …

I’d seen Danielle announce on her Facebook page that she had arranged a relatively last minute event in Sydney. It piqued my interest but I didn’t buy a ticket. I actually decided to let Ruby know that we’ll go see her in the States or Canada next year as one of our big goals or BHAGs.

How I’m going to sleep my way to clarity

April 15, 2014

I like to think of myself as a pretty good sleeper, and on these rainy Autumn days, there is nothing better than an early night, a cozy doona and a long sound sleep.

So this past weekend, on suitably Autumn day, I did a little more of what I do best and spent a couple of hours with our beautiful contributor Cora, to learn the art of Yoga Nidra or what she refers to as ‘the art of divine sleep’.

The art of divine sleep? sounds like beauty sleep fit for royalty – I was sold. And the best part of what I learned – you could ‘sleep’ during the day and change your thought patterns at the same time. Win win I say.

Inspiring Speech on Beauty

March 17, 2014

I had to share this wonderful speech from the Oscar Winner Lupita Nyong’o.

At the 7th annual Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon Lupita accepted an award for Best Breakthrough Performance. It was here she delivered a speech on beauty which was incredibly inspirational and it was one which really resonated with me.

Enjoy watching her speech beauties, and hope you find as inspiring as I did:

Self Compassion – What is it? and why you need it!

March 6, 2014

Self-compassion is a trending term in personal development and mental health literature these days – but what is it really? Is self-compassion more than simply indulging yourself?

In the last decade, the works of people like Kristin Neff, Brene Brown and Tara Brach (to name a few) have opened the doors to a new way of scientifically understanding the self. These researchers have focused on self-compassion, radical self-acceptance, courage and vulnerability as a way to lead happier, more authentic lives – and they are kicking ass while doing it. To keep things simple, today we will narrow our focus to self-compassion.

Exercise & Emotions – The Scientific Link Between Being Active & Being Happy

February 20, 2014

exercise & emotions

You know it, and so do I  – that dewy blissed out glow you get after a great workout, or a sweaty vinyasa class. It’s more than just a temporary, feel good fix – exercise has a real and profound effect on your mood. The exceptional mood enhancing benefits of exercise has become one of my primary motivations for staying active.

About 2 years ago, I made a pledge to myself and it went a little something like this:

“I will never again exercise, or make food choices, that are based solely on improving my physical appearance.”

This might sound a little strange, given the vast array of physical benefits of exercising and eating healthy – but I was dealing with a whacked out inner critic, and I needed to do something dramatic to put her in her place.
