Why is a healthy gut important to beautiful skin?

In the quest for glowing skin, I can’t help but notice all this talk about the correlation between gut health and the quality of your skin. It seems that the terms probiotic, prebiotic, gut-friendly and fermented are popping up all over the place – but what does this all mean for our skin?

A couple of recent articles lead me to delve a little deeper into the subject – the first by local Sydney beauty and Naturopath Carla Oates aka The Beauty Chef and the second from Paleo expert Dr Chris Kresser, who has a significant interest in skin health. He puts it very simply – “if you want to heal your skin, you have to heal your gut”. Need you say more Chris!

Finding my muse on the run

December 12, 2013

Starting the day cruising along Sydney harbour is the perfect way to get to work in the city. One of my go-to books for the commute is Danielle LaPorte’s The Fire Starter Sessions and from time to time I will get stuck into a chapter or two for inspiration. On a recent work day morning, I dived into a section on creativity, art and musing. I was really captivated by her thoughts on how to tune in to your muse and soon discovered that with a little practice, it could become one of your most powerful assets.

Until now, I associated the word muse with Greek mythology or more ironically Karl Largerfeld and his string of Hollywood sirens. But through Danielle LaPorte’s writing, it was clear that everyone has a muse whether they know it or not. The tricky part is working out the best way to tap into its power.

Coconut oil – The most universal oil in the pantry

December 9, 2013

You may have noticed from a recent post that A Conscious Beauty is a pretty nuts about coconut especially for the positive effect this good fat has on our insides. If that wasn’t enough proof, today we want to blow you away with what this wondrous little oil can do for our outer beauty.

In our household, the main way we use coconut oil externally is by applying it direct to the skin as a simple moisturiser. I love to use a more fragrant brand of oil because when I apply it to my skin, the smell is a lovely little reminder of our island holidays. Coconut oil is also great for treating moisture loss with our hair. Spoil yourself once in a while by applying the oil to the ends of your hair as a simple (and cheap) deep-conditioning hair mask.

Why we are nuts about coconut

What is coconut oil?

If any of you know me well, you will know that I am pretty obsessed with this humble oil. As I write this, I am super excited to be letting you in on a 5000 year old secret that in some cultures is known as ‘the tree of life’ or ‘the tree of a thousand uses’. In our household, this oil is easily the most diverse food we consume and apply to our skin on a daily basis. So much so, I have taken to keeping a jar of coconut oil in the bathroom as my go to moisturiser.

I discovered this little gem of a food about 4 years ago, with the help of a Naturopath and close friends Chris and Nicky Jones of Primal Movement. At the time, I made a choice to seriously clean up my diet in an effort to overcome serious allergies. I drew from the principles behind paleo and primal living, which quickly led me to coconut oil.
