Desk Yoga – 5 Minutes To Relieve Neck & Shoulder Tension

April 24, 2014

It’s a undeniable part of modern life – we all spend gigantic amounts of time sitting in front of computer screens, tap-tapping away. Honestly, as a book worm and introvert, I’m not complaining, I get lots of great stuff accomplished in front of my macbook. Regardless of how much I love what I am working on, at the end of a long day I feel a like I have been carrying bags of sand on my shoulders. Sound familiar?

Better posture, proper work set up and regular breaks are all necessary preventative steps to reduce neck and shoulder pain. However, no matter how much prevention you put in, we humans are still not designed to be fixated in front of a glowing box for hours on end. The following is what I call my 5-minute-fix for sitting in front of the computer all day.

What style of yoga is right for you?

April 3, 2014

what style of yoga is best quote with yoga quote

One of the beautiful things about yoga is that there is so much variety, no matter what your taste, ability level or goals are, there is bound to be a style that speaks to you.

However, with so much choice there is often confusion about how to choose a style to practice. It really comes down to a few questions to ask yourself before you start to shop around for a class:

1. What are your goals – why do you want to practice yoga in the first place?

Someone who wants to reduce stress would benefit from a very different class than a new mum that wants to get back into shape. We all have our own reasons that draw us to the practice, getting clear on yours will help you make a more informed choice.

2. What are your limitations?

Do you have an injury or illness that will affect your ability to move in a certain way, or do you have medical concerns that you need to consider?

We Love: YOGA Loft Newcastle

I love Sydney, the beaches, the nightlife, the people and the mix of mega yoga studios with smaller intimate one room yoga spaces. However, there are times, many times when I crave getting out of the city and to a place where life moves a bit more slowly. Earlier this month on a last minute whim I decided to hop on a train at central station and go visit my Aussie Mum, Kate in Newcastle. I had been there a few times in the past, but mostly just hung around her flat eating homemade dinners, chatting and getting to know each other. This time we decided to be a little more adventurous and explore the city together.

Self Compassion – What is it? and why you need it!

March 6, 2014

Self-compassion is a trending term in personal development and mental health literature these days – but what is it really? Is self-compassion more than simply indulging yourself?

In the last decade, the works of people like Kristin Neff, Brene Brown and Tara Brach (to name a few) have opened the doors to a new way of scientifically understanding the self. These researchers have focused on self-compassion, radical self-acceptance, courage and vulnerability as a way to lead happier, more authentic lives – and they are kicking ass while doing it. To keep things simple, today we will narrow our focus to self-compassion.

Exercise & Emotions – The Scientific Link Between Being Active & Being Happy

February 20, 2014

exercise & emotions

You know it, and so do I  – that dewy blissed out glow you get after a great workout, or a sweaty vinyasa class. It’s more than just a temporary, feel good fix – exercise has a real and profound effect on your mood. The exceptional mood enhancing benefits of exercise has become one of my primary motivations for staying active.

About 2 years ago, I made a pledge to myself and it went a little something like this:

“I will never again exercise, or make food choices, that are based solely on improving my physical appearance.”

This might sound a little strange, given the vast array of physical benefits of exercising and eating healthy – but I was dealing with a whacked out inner critic, and I needed to do something dramatic to put her in her place.
